MEDEX CANCER SCREENING

Cancer screening usually involves different tests for different organs. SPOT-MAS takes a different approach by using one blood sample to look for early molecular signals associated with multiple cancers at the same time.

What Is the SPOT-MAS Test?

SPOT-MAS is a multi-cancer early detection blood test developed by Gene Solutions. It is designed to screen for molecular signals associated with several common cancers through a single blood draw.

Tumours can release very small fragments of genetic material into the bloodstream. This is known as circulating tumour DNA, or ctDNA. SPOT-MAS analyses information found in blood to identify patterns that may be associated with cancer.

Unlike screening methods that focus on one organ at a time, SPOT-MAS allows several cancer types to be assessed from one blood sample. This can make it a useful additional screening option for people who want broader cancer screening as part of their preventive health plan.

What Areas and Cancer Types Can SPOT-MAS Screen For?

SPOT-MAS is designed to look for early cancer-associated signals across multiple areas of the body from a single blood sample. The SPOT-MAS 10 test screens for signals associated with 10 cancer types and organ areas.

Breast
Screens for signals associated with breast cancer.
Lungs
Screens for signals associated with lung cancer.
Colorectum
Screens for signals associated with colorectal or bowel cancer.
Liver & Biliary Tract
Screens for signals associated with liver and bile duct cancers.
Stomach
Screens for signals associated with stomach cancer.
Ovaries
Screens for signals associated with ovarian cancer.
Pancreas
Screens for signals associated with pancreatic cancer.
Oesophagus
Screens for signals associated with oesophageal cancer.
Endometrium
Screens for signals associated with endometrial cancer.
Head & Neck
Screens for cancer-associated signals arising from the head and neck region.

The test is suitable for both men and women. Cancers affecting female reproductive organs, such as ovarian and endometrial cancer, are relevant specifically to women.

These 10 areas include cancers for which established screening programmes already exist, such as breast, lung and colorectal cancer, as well as several cancers where routine population screening is more limited.

This is one of the key advantages of a multi-cancer early detection approach. Instead of checking only one organ, SPOT-MAS analyses a blood sample for cancer-associated signals that may originate from several different parts of the body.

Important: SPOT-MAS is a screening test and does not confirm a cancer diagnosis. If an abnormal or positive signal is detected, further medical assessment and confirmatory testing are required.

How Does the SPOT-MAS Test Work?

The process is straightforward. Approximately 10 ml of blood is collected and sent for specialised genomic analysis. The laboratory looks for cancer-associated DNA signals and patterns in the blood.

You do not need to fast before the test, and a doctor’s referral is not required to book SPOT-MAS through MedEx.

Results are generally available within 7–10 days and can be provided digitally. This is particularly convenient for international visitors who may have already left Thailand by the time their report is completed.

What Can the Result Tell You?

SPOT-MAS is a screening test, not a diagnostic test. This distinction is important.

A negative result means that the test did not identify a cancer-associated signal at the time of testing. However, no cancer screening test can completely rule out cancer.

If a cancer signal is detected, the result does not by itself confirm that cancer is present. Your doctor may recommend additional investigations such as diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, specialist assessment or other appropriate tests to determine the cause of the finding.

Some reports may also produce an intermediate finding, meaning that a weaker signal was identified but it does not meet the threshold for a positive result. In these situations, follow-up or repeat testing may be recommended depending on the clinical circumstances.

Who May Consider SPOT-MAS?

SPOT-MAS may be considered by adults who want to add broader cancer screening to their routine health assessment. The test is particularly relevant for adults aged 40 years and above.

Younger adults may also discuss the test with a healthcare professional when they have factors that could increase cancer risk, such as a strong family history of cancer, smoking history, regular alcohol consumption or certain occupational exposures.

SPOT-MAS should complement rather than replace established cancer-screening programmes. Mammography, cervical screening, colorectal screening and other investigations recommended according to your age, sex, medical history and individual risk remain important.

Simple Blood Collection

There is no special preparation or fasting requirement. Patients can have their blood collected at a MedEx clinic in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

For patients in Bangkok who prefer not to travel to the clinic, MedEx can also arrange blood collection at a hotel, condominium or home for an additional ฿750 home collection fee.

Why Early Cancer Screening Matters

Cancer can sometimes develop for a significant period before obvious symptoms appear. Screening is intended to identify potential abnormalities before they would otherwise come to medical attention.

Blood-based multi-cancer screening provides another option for people looking for a broader view of cancer risk using a convenient sample. However, the result must always be interpreted within the wider context of your medical history and existing screening recommendations.

If you are considering SPOT-MAS, a healthcare professional can explain what the test does, its limitations, and whether it is appropriate alongside your current health-screening programme.

Medical note: SPOT-MAS is a cancer screening test and does not diagnose cancer. A positive or abnormal result requires appropriate clinical evaluation and confirmatory testing. A negative result does not completely exclude cancer or replace routine cancer screening recommended by your healthcare professional.
