Know the Symptoms, Risks, and Treatments for STIs

As experts in sexual health testing, we understand the importance of staying informed and educated about sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Whether you are sexually active or not, it is crucial to know your status and take necessary steps to protect your health.

Why Get Tested for STIs?

Many STIs do not have visible symptoms, which means you could be infected and not even know it. Left untreated, STIs can lead to serious health problems, including infertility, cancer, and even death.

MedEx Network offers a comprehensive range of sexual health testing services to help you take control of your sexual health. Our tests are quick, confidential, and accurate, giving you peace of mind and the information you need to make informed decisions about your health.

Types of Sexual Health Testing

Our Network Providers offer a variety of sexual health testing services to suit your needs. Here are some of the most common tests we offer:

  1. Blood Tests – Blood tests are used to detect infections that are transmitted through the bloodstream, such as HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis.
  2. Urine Tests – Urine tests are used to detect infections that are transmitted through bodily fluids, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea.
  3. Swab Tests – Swab tests are used to detect infections that are transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, such as genital herpes and human papillomavirus (HPV).
  4. Physical Exams – Physical exams can help detect STIs that have visible symptoms, such as genital warts or sores.

The Importance of Confidentiality

At MedEx, we understand the sensitive nature of sexual health testing, which is why we prioritize confidentiality in all of our services. We offer a safe and private environment for testing, and all of our results are kept strictly confidential.

Our network’s experienced medical staff will work with you to determine which tests are appropriate for your needs, and will guide you through the testing process from start to finish.

If you do test positive for an STI, our doctors will work with you to provide the necessary treatment, while also helping you to prevent the spread of the infection to others.

By getting tested regularly, you can catch and treat STIs early, before they cause irreversible damage to your health.

What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, which is primarily spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected partner and can also be transmitted from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.

What are the symptoms of Chlamydia?
Often, time people infected with Chlamydia are asymptomatic. Therefore it is sometimes called a “Silent” STI, but those who do note symptoms should be aware that they may be caused by other STIs or conditions. Women may have abnormal yellowish vaginal discharge, pain or burning during urination and sex, bleeding between periods or after sex, lower abdominal pain, or pelvic pain.

Men may have unusual discharges, pain or swelling in the testicles, and a burning sensation during urination.

In men, it may cause epididymitis, inflammation of the tube that carries sperm, which can lead to infertility.

A newborn baby exposed to Chlamydia during delivery might suffer from arthritis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, and eye infections.

How is Chlamydia Diagnosed and treated?
Chlamydia is diagnosed through laboratory tests such as urine tests, genital or rectal swab tests, or throat swab tests. Testing is recommended for sexually active individuals, especially those with multiple partners or unprotected sex. Treatment includes antibiotics. Patients and their sexual partners should complete the entire course of antibiotics and avoid sexual activity until treatment is complete.

Why you should not leave Chlamydia untreated?
If Chlamydia is left untreated, there is an increased risk of getting other STIs, including HIV.
In women, untreated Chlamydia can develop into pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can cause chronic pain, infertility, and ectopic pregnancies.

How to Avoid and Prevent Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a common STI that affects both men and women. Preventive measures include practicing safe sex, using condoms consistently and correctly, getting tested regularly, limiting sexual partners, avoiding douching, and speaking with a healthcare provider.

What is Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can affect both men and women and is spread through sexual contact with an infected person, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her baby during childbirth.

What are the Symptoms of Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea may not cause any symptoms in some people, but common symptoms include painful urination, discharge from the penis or vagina, pain during sex, and abdominal pain. Symptoms may appear within a few days or several weeks after infection.

How is Gonorrhea Diagnosed and treated?
Gonorrhea is diagnosed through a laboratory test of a sample of urine, vaginal fluid, or discharge from the penis or rectum. It is curable and treated with antibiotics, typically a single dose of an injectable medication and/or an oral antibiotic. It is equally important to complete the full course of antibiotics to ensure the infection is completely cleared. To prevent re-infection, it's advisable to abstain from sexual activity for a week after completing treatment.

What Happens if Gonorrhea is Left Untreated?
If you leave Gonorrhea untreated, it can increase the risk of contracting other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. In women, untreated gonorrhea can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which may lead to irreversible infertility and fatal ectopic pregnancy. Pregnant women with Gonorrhea are at an increased risk of miscarriage, amniotic sac and fluid infections, and premature birth. The bacterium responsible for Gonorrhea, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, can also be transmitted from mother to child during delivery, potentially leading to eye infections and even blindness in newborns.

In men, Gonorrhea can spread to the epididymis, resulting in epididymitis and testicular pain. Some studies have suggested a potential link between Gonorrhea infection and an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.

How to Avoid and Prevent Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea can be prevented by practicing safe sex, using condoms, and limiting sexual partners. Regular testing, including other STIs, can help us with early detection and treatment. It is also advised to do regular STI testing, including Gonorrhea, for early detection and treatment.

What is syphilis?
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, which is primarily spread through sexual contact with someone with an active infection, usually through contact with the sores or rash on the skin or mucous membranes. The sores can appear on the genitals, anus, or mouth and can be transmitted during oral, anal, vaginal, or genital contact.

What are the Symptoms of Syphilis?
Syphilis can be asymptomatic for many years and develops in four stages – primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary. The symptoms of the primary phase are marked by a painless sore (but not always), which progresses to the secondary if left untreated, and symptoms include a rash, fever, sore throat, headaches, weight loss, and fatigue. In the latent stage, there is no apparent sign or symptom, and untreated Syphilis may progress to the tertiary stage resulting in organ damage such as the heart, brain, nervous system, and other organs and eventually death.

How to Avoid Syphilis?
To prevent syphilis, it is advised to practice safe sex by using protection, limiting the number of sexual partners, and being in a long-term and mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is free of syphilis.

Similarly, sexually active people falling under any category below should get regular testing for Syphilis:

  • Gay or bisexual men,
  • Have HIV,
  • Taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention, or
  • Have partner(s) who have tested positive for syphilis.

How is Syphilis diagnosed and treated?
Syphilis can be tested with a blood test, sometimes with a swab or fluid sample from the sore or rash may also be taken to check for bacteria.

Syphilis is curable and can be treated with a complete course of antibiotics intaking, typically penicillin, which is highly effective in curing the infection.

What Happens if Syphilis is Left Untreated?
If you leave Syphilis untreated, it can increase the risk of contracting other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. Sometimes, it might progress through all four phases of Syphilis, causing various health complications and eventually leading to death in the last stage. Infected pregnant women can have miscarriages, premature birth, or death of newborn babies. They can also transmit the Syphilis infection to their unborn babies, known as congenital syphilis.

What is Herpes?
Herpes is a viral infection caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV), and there are two types of HSV: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 typically causes oral herpes or cold sores around the mouth, while HSV-2 is usually responsible for genital herpes, but both types can cause both oral and genital herpes. Herpes is spread through direct contact with the virus, typically through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity or by sharing personal items.

What are the Symptoms of Herpes?
Herpes symptoms vary depending on the location of the infection and whether it’s the first outbreak or a recurrent episode. Common symptoms include blisters or sores, itching, burning or tingling sensations, flu-like symptoms, and pain or discomfort during urination. It’s important to note that some people may not experience any symptoms or have mild symptoms that go unnoticed, and symptoms may not appear until several weeks or months after infection.

How is Herpes Diagnosed and treated?
Herpes can be diagnosed through a physical exam and laboratory test. Although there is no cure for herpes, antiviral medications can help manage symptoms and reduce outbreak frequency. It is important to communicate openly with sexual partners and work with a healthcare provider to manage herpes symptoms. Herpes can be spread even when there are no visible symptoms.

Why you should not leave Herpes untreated?
While herpes may not be life-threatening, if left untreated, it can cause recurrent painful blisters or sores, increase the risk of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV, and lead to complications during pregnancy.

How to Avoid and Prevent Herpes?
To avoid and prevent herpes: practice safe sex, avoid sexual contact during outbreaks, limit sexual partners, maintain good hygiene, manage stress, and avoid sharing personal items. It is important to note that herpes can still be contracted even with these measures, so seeking medical attention and testing if exposed or experiencing symptoms is crucial.

What is HPV?
HPV stands for Human Papillomavirus, which is a common sexually transmitted infection. There are more than 100 types of HPV, and some strains can cause warts on different parts of the body, including the genital area, while other strains can cause cancer, particularly cervical cancer in women. HPV is spread through skin-to-skin contact, including sexual contact, and can infect both men and women.

What are the Symptoms of HPV?
HPV infections often do not have symptoms and can go away on their own, but some strains can cause genital warts or lead to certain types of cancers. Symptoms of HPV include genital warts, abnormal Pap smear results, and symptoms of cervical or other types of cancer, such as abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, and pain during sex. Regular checkups and screenings are important to detect and treat HPV-related conditions, as many people with HPV do not experience symptoms.

How is HPV Diagnosed and Treated?
HPV can be diagnosed through visual exam, Pap test, and HPV test. Treatment depends on the type of HPV and the symptoms it is causing, and may include topical treatments, cryotherapy, surgery, and HPV vaccination. It is important to note that treatment does not cure the virus, but it can help manage symptoms and reduce the risk of complications. Monitoring and management by a healthcare provider is important for those diagnosed with HPV.

Why you should not leave HPV untreated?
HPV can lead to health problems if left untreated as it can cause cancer, genital warts, and abnormal cervical cells, which can lead to further complications. HPV is highly contagious, and can be passed on to sexual partners even if there are no visible symptoms.

How to Avoid and Prevent HPV?
To avoid and prevent HPV, one should get vaccinated, practice safe sex, limit sexual partners, practice good hygiene, and get regular screening. HPV vaccines are available for people between the ages of 9-45 and can protect against certain strains of HPV. Condoms or dental dams can reduce the risk of HPV transmission, but may not provide complete protection since HPV can also spread through skin-to-skin contact. Reducing the number of sexual partners and keeping the genital area clean and dry can also help prevent the spread of HPV. Regular Pap tests and HPV tests are also important for early detection and treatment.

What is Genital Warts?
Genital warts are a sexually transmitted infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are small, flesh-colored or gray growths that appear on or around the genital area, anus, or mouth. Genital warts can cause discomfort, itching, or bleeding and are typically diagnosed through a visual exam by a healthcare provider. They can be treated with topical or oral medications, cryotherapy (freezing), or surgical removal. It is important to note that genital warts can increase the risk of developing certain types of cancers, including cervical, penile, and anal cancers.

What are the Symptoms of Genital Warts?
The symptoms of genital warts include:

  • Small, flesh-colored or gray growths in the genital area, anus, or mouth.
  • Clusters of warts that resemble cauliflower-like bumps.
  • Itching, discomfort, or pain in the affected area.
  • Bleeding during sexual activity or during a pelvic exam.

It is important to note that some people with genital warts may not experience any symptoms and may not even be aware that they have the infection.

How is Genital Warts Diagnosed and treated?
Genital warts are diagnosed through a visual exam by a healthcare provider, and sometimes a biopsy or laboratory tests may be done to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment options for genital warts include topical medications, cryotherapy, and surgery. However, treatment does not eliminate the virus that causes genital warts, so warts may return in the future.

Why you should not leave Genital Warts untreated?
Leaving genital warts untreated can cause physical discomfort and increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer, as well as the risk of transmitting the infection to others. Therefore, it’s important to seek medical attention if you suspect that you have genital warts or have been diagnosed with the infection.

How to Avoid and Prevent Genital Warts?
The steps to avoid and prevent genital warts include practicing safe sex, getting vaccinated against HPV, limiting sexual partners, and practicing good hygiene. However, even with these measures, genital warts can still be contracted, and seeking medical attention and testing is recommended if there are symptoms or exposure.

I had a wonderful experience with MedEx, I highly recommend going here! I needed to get several lab tests done and they easily did all of them, and I received the results well before I needed to leave Bangkok in a week! The best part was that I didn’t even need to schedule an appointment, I was simply able to walk in, show them the list of tests I wanted, and everything was done in about 30 minutes. Both the receptionist and nurse were very sweet to me, something I especially appreciated since I was nervous about getting my blood drawn. Overall a really great experience that was fast, affordable, and helped give me peace of mind, so thank you!

While on vacation in Bangkok, I had to see a doctor. I was able to get an appointment very quickly via their WhatsApp number. It was very smooth and simple. They then sent me to a specialist at the hospital who saw me in the morning. They speak English and provide very good service. I recommend!

I’ve used their services three times now and they’ve always been very good and efficient. However, there was a booking issue today that I wasn’t informed about, which was disappointing as I had traveled from another district. That said, the gentleman at the counter handled the situation with professionalism and courtesy. He proactively worked out a resolution, which I found very impressive.

This place was recommended to me by a friend who has used their testing services multiple times. Friendly staff is very responsive to WhatsApp messages, so it was easy to engage. Khun Blue was helpful and guided on options. Quick turnaround for their VIP packages, which IMO are reasonably priced and offers peace of mind for any level of concern. Good location between Asoke and Nana BTS, so easy to access.

Had my checkup done at MedEx recently and honestly very impressed. Everything was super smooth, booking was easy, the staff speaks and understanding English very we and were friendly, the whole process felt organized and stress-free. No long waiting, no confusion, nothing complicated. Just in, out, and done properly. To beat the BKK traffic, I recommend patients to take BTS to BTS Nana; though free parking is provided. Really happy with how it went, and I’d definitely recommend them if you want a simple, professional checkup without the usual hassle. Also learned about their test at home service which is on-demand and fulfilled within 1-2 hours. Will give it a try next time

I have been checking info via What’s App and the whole process is smooth and efficient!!! Customer service agent answered my questions within 5 minutes I first raised the question, and follow up efficiently with all required info, e.g. time, date, what I should do in advance, payment, etc. I was able to arrange an x-ray for my C spine with a friendly price ($1,400 THB) the next day. I first approached them at almost 5pm the day before. The entire process is just SUPER!

Today I will introduce a good quality clinic that is suitable for foreigners because the price is not expensive. This clinic is located in Sukhumvit Soi 13. Walk into Soi Sukhumvit 13, walk into the alley for about 500 meters, you will see a building on your right hand side called Trendy Office & Plaza. Then take the escalator up to the 2nd floor, the clinic will be on your right hand side. The staff here are very helpful. The guy with glasses, whose name I can’t remember, was very helpful with the documents for my husband. One thing that this clinic does a great job with is that no matter how hot-headed or angry you are, they will always be polite and courteous to you. Therefore, everyone should be polite to the staff here.
