MycoTOX Profile™

A urine test that detects mycotoxins – toxic compounds produced by certain moulds (fungi).

What does this test measure?

The test checks for common mycotoxins, including:

• Ochratoxin A
• Aflatoxin M1
• Zearalenone
• Roridin (a trichothecene produced by Stachybotrys)
• Fumonisins

These mycotoxins are associated with moulds such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, and Stachybotrys. People can inhale or ingest these toxins in mouldy environments or through contaminated foods, leading to accumulation in the body and potential health symptoms. This test utilizes liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to detect even minute quantities of these toxins in urine.

Clinical Use

Clinically, testing for mycotoxins is very useful for patients with unexplained chronic symptoms, such as fatigue, pain, and cognitive issues, particularly after mold exposure. For example, someone living in a house with hidden mold may have elevated levels of ochratoxin. A positive mycotoxin test can confirm that their living environment is a contributing factor to their health issues, prompting necessary remediation and treatment options, such as cholestyramine or glutathione, to help bind and eliminate these toxins. This testing is often included in the evaluation of chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) and is utilized in integrative medicine for patients suffering from chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia.
