Description

IgE Mold Allergy Test

This is an IgE test focusing on common allergenic moulds. Moulds produce spores that can cause allergic reactions inhalationally.

What does this test measure?

The panel likely tests IgE to:

  • Alternaria (common outdoor mould, very allergenic, associated with asthma)
  • Cladosporium (common outdoor mould)
  • Aspergillus fumigatus (can cause ABPA in asthma)
  • Penicillium
  • Candida albicans possibly (less common)
  • Helminthosporium (less common)
  • Fusarium maybe
  • Possibly Stachybotrys (black mould, but rarely tested)

Who is this test most suitable for?

  • People living in old, damp homes or working in agriculture/compost with respiratory issues
  • Those in “sick building” scenarios wanting to know if it’s an allergy
  • Individuals in climates with heavy moulds and unexplained perennial allergies

Clinical Use

If someone has perennial allergic symptoms in damp environments, old houses, or workplaces with mould, it may indicate an allergy to moulds, distinct from a reaction to mycotoxins, as shown by IgE levels. For example, Alternaria IgE can increase the risk of severe asthma in children.

It’s important to differentiate between mould allergy and mould toxicity. Mould exposure can cause illness through either toxins (non-IgE mediated) or an IgE allergy, or both. A positive test result suggests that avoiding moulds and considering allergy shots or medications could help. If the result is negative but the patient still feels unwell, it may point to mycotoxins or irritation rather than an IgE allergy. This distinction helps guide treatment options.
