How fast can I get STD test results in Bangkok?

VIP Express in Bangkok returns HIV RNA PCR and STI-14 PCR in 3 to 5 hours. Outside Bangkok the same tests take 1 to 3 days.

What happens if an STD result is positive?

A counsellor contacts you and arranges a consultation with an STD doctor at MedEx Neo Clinic, in person or online, from 500 THB. Most of what these panels detect is curable with antibiotics; HIV and herpes are treatable and managed.

Do I need to fast before an STD test?

No fasting. For urine PCR, try not to pass urine for at least an hour before the sample and do not clean the area first. If you have taken antibiotics in the past two weeks, say so, as they can suppress a bacterial PCR result.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is an STD/STI?

STD stands for sexually transmitted disease, which is an infection that is transmitted through sexual contact. Similarly, STI stands for sexually transmitted infection.

Which STDs can be tested with a blood test?

HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Herpes and Syphilis can be tested with a blood test.

Which STIs can be tested urine or swab?

The STI-14 PCR DNA Multiplex test with urine or swab sample specifically screens for 14 sexually transmitted infections, which are: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Ureaplasma parvum, Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), Human papillomavirus (HPV) 16, HPV 18, Haemophilus ducreyi, Treponema pallidum (syphilis), Mycoplasma hominis, and Gardnerella vaginalis. Swab is especially recommended for HPV PCR.

How long does it take to get STD test results?

The time it takes to get STD test results depends on the type of test and where you get tested. Some test results are available in as little as 15 min, while others may take a few days or weeks.

How can I get tested for STDs?

You can get tested for STDs at a healthcare provider's office, clinic, or health department. Some STDs can also be tested for at home with a test kit.

If you test positive, our counselors can arrange an in-person doctor visit or online consultation at MedEx Neo Clinic and other network providers so that you can receive appropriate medical care, treatment and advice.

What should I do before an STD test?

Before an STD test, it's best to refrain from sexual activity for 24 hours, drink lots of water, and avoid urinating for at least an hour before providing a urine sample. This will help ensure the most accurate results.

How often should I get tested for STDs?

The frequency of STD testing depends on your sexual activity and your risk for infection. It's recommended to get tested at least once a year if you are sexually active, or more frequently if you have multiple partners, engage in unprotected sex, or have a history of STDs.

Know the Symptoms, Risks, and Treatments for STIs

As experts in sexual health testing, we understand the importance of staying informed and educated about sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Whether you are sexually active or not, it is crucial to know your status and take necessary steps to protect your health.

Why Get Tested for STIs?

Many STIs do not have visible symptoms, which means you could be infected and not even know it. Left untreated, STIs can lead to serious health problems, including infertility, cancer, and even death.

MedEx Network offers a comprehensive range of sexual health testing services to help you take control of your sexual health. Our tests are quick, confidential, and accurate, giving you peace of mind and the information you need to make informed decisions about your health.

Types of Sexual Health Testing

Our Network Providers offer a variety of sexual health testing services to suit your needs. Here are some of the most common tests we offer:

Blood Tests – Blood tests are used to detect infections that are transmitted through the bloodstream, such as HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis.
Urine Tests – Urine tests are used to detect infections that are transmitted through bodily fluids, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea.
Swab Tests – Swab tests are used to detect infections that are transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, such as genital herpes and human papillomavirus (HPV).
Physical Exams – Physical exams can help detect STIs that have visible symptoms, such as genital warts or sores.

The Importance of Confidentiality

At MedEx, we understand the sensitive nature of sexual health testing, which is why we prioritize confidentiality in all of our services. We offer a safe and private environment for testing, and all of our results are kept strictly confidential.

Our network’s experienced medical staff will work with you to determine which tests are appropriate for your needs, and will guide you through the testing process from start to finish.

If you do test positive for an STI, our doctors will work with you to provide the necessary treatment, while also helping you to prevent the spread of the infection to others.

By getting tested regularly, you can catch and treat STIs early, before they cause irreversible damage to your health.

STD and STI testing in Thailand

Every infection our STD tests screen for

A reference for all 29 organisms in the STI-14 and STI-29 PCR panels, plus HIV, HPV and the hepatitis viruses — 36 entries covering symptoms, specimen, earliest detection time, treatment, and what a positive actually means.

Which specimen do you need?

PCR only finds an infection at the site you sample. If you have had oral or anal sex, a urine test alone will miss throat and rectal infection entirely.

Urine specimen

First-catch urine, ideally at least one hour after you last passed urine. The standard specimen for urethral infection in men, and accepted for women. Do not clean first — the sample needs what is at the urethral opening.

Genital swab specimen

Vaginal or cervical swab in women, urethral or penile swab in men. More sensitive than urine for chlamydia and gonorrhoea in women, and required for Candida, Gardnerella and HPV genotyping. Self-collected vaginal swabs perform as well as clinician-collected ones.

Throat swab specimen

For anyone who has had oral sex. Throat gonorrhoea and chlamydia are almost always symptomless and are missed entirely by a urine test — a genital-only panel will not find them.

Rectal swab specimen

For anyone who has had receptive anal sex. As with the throat, rectal infection is usually silent and is not detected by urine testing. Also used for Group B Streptococcus screening.

Blood specimen

Required for HIV, syphilis serology, hepatitis A, B and C, and HSV serotyping. PCR on blood detects HIV earlier than antibody testing, from around five to seven days after exposure.

Each specimen is charged separately: 3,499 THB per specimen for regular STI-14 PCR, 5,000 THB per specimen for VIP Express. Testing every exposed site matters more than testing one site thoroughly.

Sexually transmitted

Infections passed between partners during sex. These are the ones worth ruling out first, and every one is either curable, treatable or preventable by vaccine.

Chlamydia — symptoms, testing and treatment

Chlamydia trachomatis STI-14Bacterial · curable

Most people have no symptoms. Often called a silent infection, which is why testing matters more than waiting for signs.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: 2,499 THB regular · 4,000 THB express

What it is

A bacterial infection spread through vaginal, anal or oral sex, and from mother to baby during childbirth. The most commonly reported bacterial STI worldwide.

What to look for

Women may notice yellowish discharge, burning during urination or sex, bleeding between periods or after sex, and lower abdominal or pelvic pain. Men may notice unusual discharge, burning during urination, and pain or swelling in the testicles.

In men it can cause epididymitis, which can lead to infertility. A newborn exposed during delivery may develop conjunctivitis or pneumonia.

Testing and treatment

Diagnosed by urine test, or genital, rectal or throat swab. PCR detects it earlier and more accurately than antibody testing. Treated with antibiotics — you and your partner should finish the full course and avoid sex until treatment is complete.

If left untreated

Raises the risk of acquiring other STIs including HIV. In women it can develop into pelvic inflammatory disease, causing chronic pain, infertility and ectopic pregnancy.

Prevention

Consistent condom use, regular testing, fewer partners, and avoiding douching.

Where to test

Tested at MedEx Neo Clinic on Sukhumvit 13 and BTS Phra Khanong in Bangkok, at MedEx Neo Clinic Chiang Mai, and at 50+ partner laboratories across 30+ provinces in Thailand. Clinician-assisted collection at home or hotel is available for 750 THB.

Gonorrhoea — symptoms, testing and treatment

Neisseria gonorrhoeae STI-14Bacterial · curable

Curable, but reinfection is common. Avoid sex for a week after finishing treatment, and make sure partners are treated too.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: 4,000 THB express

What it is

A bacterial infection spread through vaginal, anal and oral sex, and from mother to baby during childbirth. Antibiotic-resistant strains are increasing worldwide.

What to look for

Some people have no symptoms. Common signs are painful urination, discharge from the penis or vagina, pain during sex and abdominal pain, appearing within days to several weeks after infection. Throat and rectal infections are usually silent.

Testing and treatment

Diagnosed from urine, vaginal fluid, or discharge from the penis or rectum. Treated with antibiotics — typically a single injection, an oral antibiotic, or both.

If left untreated

Can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and irreversible infertility in women, epididymitis and testicular pain in men, and eye infections or blindness in newborns. In pregnancy it raises the risk of miscarriage and premature birth.

Prevention

Condoms, fewer partners, and regular screening alongside other STIs.

Syphilis — symptoms, testing and treatment

Treponema pallidum STI-14Bacterial · curable

Four stages, and the quiet one is the danger. Latent syphilis has no signs at all, yet can progress to organ damage years later.

Specimen: Blood, or swab for PCR
Price: 500 THB VDRL/RPR

What it is

A bacterial infection spread through contact with sores or rash during oral, anal or vaginal sex. Sores can appear on the genitals, anus or mouth.

What to look for

Primary: a painless sore, though not always. Secondary: rash, fever, sore throat, headache, weight loss and fatigue. Latent: no signs whatsoever. Tertiary: damage to the heart, brain and nervous system.

Testing and treatment

A blood test, sometimes with a swab or fluid sample from a sore. Curable with a complete course of antibiotics, usually penicillin.

Who should test regularly

Gay or bisexual men
People living with HIV
Anyone taking PrEP for HIV prevention
Anyone whose partner has tested positive

If left untreated

Raises the risk of other STIs including HIV, and may progress through all four stages. In pregnancy it can cause miscarriage, premature birth, newborn death or congenital syphilis.

Mycoplasma genitalium — symptoms, testing and treatment

Mycoplasma genitalium STI-14Bacterial · curable

A recognised STI, and increasingly resistant. Treatment often needs a resistance-guided antibiotic rather than a standard course.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-14 PCR

What it is

A small bacterium transmitted sexually, and a common cause of non-gonococcal urethritis in men and cervicitis in women. Only detectable by PCR — it will not grow on routine culture.

What to look for

Often nothing. Men may notice urethral discharge and burning during urination. Women may notice discharge, bleeding between periods or after sex, and pelvic pain.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR from urine or a swab. Treated with antibiotics, though macrolide resistance is now common and a second-line agent is often required. Partners should be tested and treated.

If left untreated

Associated with pelvic inflammatory disease, and possibly with infertility and preterm birth.

Where to test

Back to index

Trichomoniasis — symptoms, testing and treatment

Trichomonas vaginalis STI-14Parasite · curable

The most common curable STI worldwide, and around seven in ten people carrying it have no symptoms at all.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-14 PCR

What it is

A single-celled parasite spread through sexual contact. It infects the vagina and urethra in women and the urethra in men.

What to look for

Women may notice frothy yellow-green discharge with an unusual smell, itching, and burning during urination or sex. Men usually notice nothing, or mild urethral irritation and discharge.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR from urine or a swab, which is considerably more sensitive than microscopy. Treated with a course of oral antibiotics. Partners must be treated at the same time or reinfection is likely.

If left untreated

Raises the risk of acquiring HIV, and in pregnancy is associated with premature birth and low birth weight.

Herpes (HSV-1) — symptoms, testing and treatment

Herpes simplex virus 1 STI-14Viral · managed

Traditionally oral, increasingly genital. HSV-1 now causes a large share of first-episode genital herpes.

Specimen: Swab of a lesion, or blood
Price: 2,299 THB regular · 3,799 THB express

What it is

A virus that typically causes cold sores around the mouth, but is readily transmitted to the genitals through oral sex. Once acquired it remains in the body for life.

What to look for

Tingling or burning before blisters appear, then painful sores that crust and heal. A first episode may come with fever and swollen glands. Many people never notice symptoms.

Testing and treatment

PCR from a swab of an active lesion is the most accurate test; blood tests can distinguish HSV-1 from HSV-2 but cannot tell you where the infection sits. Antiviral medication shortens outbreaks and reduces recurrence.

Important to know

Transmission can occur without visible sores. Genital HSV-1 tends to recur less often than genital HSV-2.

Herpes (HSV-2) — symptoms, testing and treatment

Herpes simplex virus 2 STI-14Viral · managed

Transmissible without visible symptoms. There is no cure, but antiviral medication controls outbreaks and lowers the chance of passing it on.

Specimen: Swab of a lesion, or blood
Price: 2,299 THB regular · 3,799 THB express

What it is

A virus usually responsible for genital herpes, spread by skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity. It remains in the body for life.

What to look for

Blisters or sores, itching, burning or tingling, flu-like symptoms, and discomfort during urination. Symptoms differ between a first outbreak and later ones, and may not appear for weeks or months.

Testing and treatment

PCR from a swab of an active lesion, or a type-specific blood test. There is no cure, but antiviral medication manages symptoms and reduces how often outbreaks occur.

If left untreated

Rarely dangerous in itself, but causes recurrent painful sores, raises the risk of acquiring HIV, and can cause serious illness in a newborn if transmitted during delivery.

Prevention

Condoms, avoiding contact during outbreaks, and daily suppressive antivirals for partners at risk.

HPV — symptoms, testing and treatment

Human papillomavirus Viral · vaccine available

Vaccination is available from ages 9 to 45. Some strains cause warts, others cause cancer — most often cervical cancer in women.

Specimen: Genital swab
Price: 2,499 THB · 4,000 THB same-day, 29 genotypes

What it is

A common viral infection with more than 100 types, spread by skin-to-skin contact including sex. It infects both men and women, and most infections clear on their own.

What to look for

Often nothing. Where symptoms appear they include genital warts, abnormal Pap smear results, and signs of cervical or other cancers such as abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain and pain during sex.

Testing and treatment

Diagnosed by visual examination, Pap test and HPV PCR, which can identify high-risk strains. Treatment addresses the lesions rather than the virus: topical treatment, cryotherapy or surgery.

If left untreated

High-risk strains can cause cervical, penile, anal and oropharyngeal cancers. HPV passes to partners even with no visible symptoms.

Prevention

Vaccination, condoms or dental dams, fewer partners, and regular Pap and HPV testing. Condoms reduce but do not eliminate the risk, since HPV also spreads by skin contact.

Genital warts — symptoms, testing and treatment

Human papillomavirus · low-risk types Viral · managed

Removing warts does not remove the virus. They can return after treatment, and can still be passed on.

Specimen: Visual exam, swab if needed
Price: Assessed at consultation

What it is

Small flesh-coloured or grey growths caused by low-risk HPV types, appearing on or around the genital area, anus or mouth.

What to look for

Small flesh-coloured or grey growths on the genitals, anus or mouth
Clusters resembling cauliflower-like bumps
Itching, discomfort or pain in the area
Bleeding during sex or a pelvic exam

Testing and treatment

Diagnosed by visual examination, sometimes with a biopsy. Treated with topical medication, cryotherapy or surgical removal.

Prevention

HPV vaccination protects against the types causing most genital warts. Condoms reduce but do not eliminate transmission.

Chancroid — symptoms, testing and treatment

Haemophilus ducreyi STI-14Bacterial · curable

Rare in Thailand, but painful and distinctive. Unlike syphilis, the ulcer of chancroid hurts.

Specimen: Swab of an ulcer
Price: In STI-14 PCR

What it is

A bacterial infection causing genital ulcers, transmitted sexually. Now uncommon in most of the world but still seen in parts of Africa, the Caribbean and Southeast Asia.

What to look for

One or more painful genital ulcers with ragged edges, often with tender, swollen lymph nodes in the groin that can form an abscess.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR from an ulcer swab. Treated with antibiotics; ulcers usually improve within a week.

Why it matters

Genital ulcers of any cause substantially raise the risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV.

Where to test

HIV — symptoms, testing and treatment

Human immunodeficiency virus Viral · treatable

Treatable, and undetectable means untransmittable. People on effective treatment with an undetectable viral load cannot pass HIV on sexually.

Specimen: Blood
Price: 799 THB 4th-gen combo · 3,750 THB PCR · 5,250 THB same-day PCR

What it is

A virus that attacks the immune system, spread through unprotected sex, shared needles, and from mother to baby during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding. Untreated it progresses to AIDS; treated, life expectancy is close to normal.

What to look for

Two to four weeks after infection many people get a flu-like illness — fever, sore throat, rash, swollen glands — which passes. After that HIV usually causes no symptoms for years, which is why testing is the only reliable way to know.

Testing and window periods

The 4th-generation antibody/antigen blood test detects HIV from around three to four weeks after exposure. HIV-1 PCR (RNA) detects it earlier, from around five to seven days, and is the right test after a recent high-risk exposure. Same-day PCR results are available in Bangkok.

If exposed recently

PEP — post-exposure prophylaxis — can prevent infection but must be started within 72 hours of exposure, and the sooner the better. PrEP is available for ongoing prevention.

Treatment

Daily antiretroviral therapy suppresses the virus, protects the immune system, and prevents onward transmission.

Hepatitis B — symptoms, testing and treatment

Hepatitis B virus Viral · vaccine available

Vaccine-preventable, and far more infectious than HIV. Most adults clear it; a minority carry it for life and need monitoring.

Specimen: Blood
Price: 499 THB HBsAg

What it is

A virus that infects the liver, spread through blood and sexual contact, and from mother to baby at birth. It survives outside the body far longer than HIV.

What to look for

Often nothing. Where symptoms occur they include fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, dark urine and jaundice. Chronic infection is usually silent until liver damage is advanced.

Testing and treatment

HBsAg on a blood test shows current infection. Chronic infection is managed with antiviral medication and regular liver monitoring; acute infection in adults usually clears on its own.

Prevention

The hepatitis B vaccine is highly effective and is the single best protection. Condoms reduce sexual transmission.

Where to test

Hepatitis C — symptoms, testing and treatment

Hepatitis C virus Viral · curable

Now curable in most people. Direct-acting antivirals clear the virus in eight to twelve weeks for the great majority.

Specimen: Blood
Price: 700 THB HCV

What it is

A virus that infects the liver, spread mainly through blood — shared needles, unsterile equipment — and less commonly through sex, with higher risk in men who have sex with men and where HIV is also present.

What to look for

Usually nothing for years. Chronic infection quietly scars the liver and can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Testing and treatment

An antibody blood test shows exposure; a PCR test confirms current infection. Direct-acting antiviral tablets cure more than 95 per cent of cases.

Prevention

There is no vaccine. Avoid sharing needles or equipment, and use condoms where risk is higher.

Hepatitis A — symptoms, testing and treatment

Hepatitis A virus Viral · vaccine available

Spread by the faecal–oral route, including through sex. Outbreaks among men who have sex with men are well documented, and the vaccine prevents it.

Specimen: Blood
Price: 1,350 THB HAV IgG/IgM

What it is

A liver virus spread through contaminated food or water and through oral–anal sexual contact. Unlike hepatitis B and C it does not become chronic.

What to look for

Fever, fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, dark urine and jaundice, typically two to six weeks after exposure. Children often have no symptoms.

Testing and treatment

HAV IgM on a blood test indicates recent infection; IgG indicates past infection or vaccination. There is no specific treatment — recovery is supportive and usually complete.

Prevention

Vaccination, hand hygiene, and safer sexual practices. The vaccine is recommended for men who have sex with men and for travellers.

Sexually associated

Passed on sexually, but often carried harmlessly. A positive result is the start of a conversation, not a diagnosis on its own.

Ureaplasma urealyticum — what a positive result means

Ureaplasma urealyticum STI-14Often commensal

A positive result does not always mean infection. This organism lives harmlessly in many healthy people, and is treated only when symptoms point to it.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-14 PCR

What it is

A very small bacterium found in the urogenital tract of a large proportion of sexually active adults without causing any illness. It is transmitted sexually but is not classed as an STI in its own right.

When it matters

It can contribute to non-gonococcal urethritis in men and, less clearly, to discharge or discomfort in women. In pregnancy it has been associated with preterm labour and low birth weight.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR. Treatment is considered when symptoms are present and other causes have been excluded — not on the basis of a positive result alone.

What to ask your clinician

Whether your symptoms fit this organism, and whether other causes have been ruled out first.

Where to test

Back to index

Mycoplasma hominis — what a positive result means

Mycoplasma hominis STI-14Often commensal

Commonly found in healthy people. It is most relevant when it appears alongside bacterial vaginosis or pelvic infection.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-14 PCR

What it is

A bacterium that colonises the genital tract of many adults without causing symptoms. Frequently found together with bacterial vaginosis.

When it matters

Associated with pelvic inflammatory disease, post-partum fever and, occasionally, infections outside the genital tract in people with weakened immunity.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR. Antibiotic treatment is guided by symptoms and by what else is found, since it is naturally resistant to several common antibiotics.

Where to test

Back to index

Ureaplasma parvum — what a positive result means

Ureaplasma parvum STI-14Often commensal

Found in a large share of healthy people. On its own, a positive result rarely calls for treatment.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-14 PCR

What it is

A very small bacterium closely related to Ureaplasma urealyticum, carried in the urogenital tract of many sexually active adults with no illness at all. It is included in the STI-14 PCR panel so that it can be distinguished from its more clinically relevant relative.

When it matters

Evidence linking it to urethritis is weaker than for U. urealyticum or M. genitalium. It is chiefly of interest in pregnancy, where colonisation has been associated with preterm birth, and where symptoms persist after other causes are excluded.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR from urine or a swab. Treatment is guided by symptoms rather than by the result alone — most carriers need nothing.

Vaginal flora

Bacterial vaginosis is an imbalance of the vaginal microbiome, not something caught from a partner. Partners do not usually need treating.

Gardnerella vaginalis — symptoms and treatment

Gardnerella vaginalis STI-14BV-associated

Not a sexually transmitted infection. Bacterial vaginosis is an imbalance of the vaginal microbiome, not something caught from a partner.

Specimen: Genital swab
Price: In STI-14 PCR

What it is

The organism most associated with bacterial vaginosis, in which the protective lactobacilli of the vagina are outnumbered by other bacteria. It is present in many women with no symptoms at all.

What to look for

Thin grey or white discharge with a fishy odour, often more noticeable after sex. Itching and burning are less typical than with thrush.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR, often quantitatively alongside other BV-associated organisms. Treated with antibiotics when symptomatic. Recurrence is common.

What helps

Avoid douching and scented washes, which disrupt the vaginal microbiome further. Male partners do not usually need treatment.

Where to test

Back to index

Atopobium vaginae — symptoms and treatment

Atopobium vaginae BV-associated

A marker of harder-to-treat bacterial vaginosis. Found with Gardnerella, it is linked to recurrence after standard treatment.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

An anaerobic bacterium found in the vaginal biofilm of bacterial vaginosis, usually alongside Gardnerella vaginalis.

Why it is tested

Its presence is associated with BV that returns after treatment, so detecting it can change which antibiotic is chosen.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR. Treated as part of bacterial vaginosis; it is resistant to some agents used for BV, which is why identifying it matters.

Where to test

Back to index

Bacteroides fragilis — symptoms and treatment

Bacteroides fragilis Anaerobe

Normally a gut organism. In the vagina it appears as part of the anaerobic overgrowth seen in bacterial vaginosis.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

An anaerobic bacterium that is a normal part of the bowel flora. It can be found in the vagina, particularly where the microbiome is disturbed.

When it matters

Contributes to bacterial vaginosis and, rarely, to pelvic abscesses and post-surgical infection.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR. Treated with anaerobic-active antibiotics when clinically relevant.

Where to test

Back to index

Urogenital bacteria

Bowel and skin organisms that reach the urinary tract. These cause urinary infections, not sexually transmitted ones.

Escherichia coli — what a positive result means

Escherichia coli UTI organism

The single most common cause of urinary tract infection. Its presence reflects bowel flora reaching the urinary tract, not sexual transmission.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A bacterium that lives normally in the bowel. Certain strains readily colonise the urethra and bladder, particularly in women, because of the short distance involved.

When it matters

Causes cystitis, with burning on urination, urgency, frequency and cloudy urine. If it reaches the kidneys it causes fever, flank pain and illness that needs prompt treatment.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR or urine culture. Culture is useful because it provides antibiotic sensitivities, which matter given rising resistance.

Where to test

Back to index

Klebsiella pneumoniae — what a positive result means

Klebsiella pneumoniae UTI organism

A urinary and respiratory pathogen, not an STI. Resistance is a growing concern, so sensitivities guide treatment.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A bacterium found in the bowel and environment. It causes urinary tract infections, particularly after catheterisation or antibiotic use, and pneumonia.

When it matters

Urinary symptoms are the same as any UTI. Klebsiella is more likely than E. coli to carry resistance genes, which affects which antibiotic will work.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR or culture. Treatment should be guided by sensitivity testing wherever possible.

Where to test

Back to index

Enterobacter cloacae — what a positive result means

Enterobacter cloacae Opportunistic

An opportunistic organism. It matters mainly in healthcare-associated infection rather than in otherwise healthy people.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A bowel and environmental bacterium that can colonise the urinary tract, usually after instrumentation, catheters or repeated antibiotics.

When it matters

Can cause urinary tract infection and wound infection. It carries intrinsic resistance to several antibiotic classes.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR or culture. Treatment is guided by sensitivities because of that intrinsic resistance.

Where to test

Back to index

Proteus mirabilis — what a positive result means

Proteus mirabilis UTI organism

Associated with urinary stones. It raises urine pH, which encourages stones to form.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A bowel bacterium that causes urinary tract infection, more often in men, in older people and where there is a catheter.

When it matters

Produces urease, which alkalinises the urine and promotes struvite stone formation. Recurrent Proteus infection is a reason to look for stones.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR or culture. Treated with antibiotics; persistent infection may need imaging to look for stones.

Where to test

Back to index

Pseudomonas aeruginosa — what a positive result means

Pseudomonas aeruginosa Opportunistic

An environmental organism, not a sexual one. It is found in water and damp surfaces and matters mainly where defences are already breached.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A hardy environmental bacterium. In the urinary tract it is usually associated with catheters, instrumentation or prior antibiotics.

When it matters

Causes urinary tract, wound and ear infections. It is intrinsically resistant to many antibiotics, so identification changes management.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR or culture, with sensitivity testing to guide treatment.

Where to test

Back to index

Staphylococcus aureus — what a positive result means

Staphylococcus aureus Skin organism

A skin organism. On a genital swab it may represent colonisation rather than infection.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A bacterium carried harmlessly on the skin and in the nose of a large share of the population. It causes infection when it enters through broken skin.

When it matters

Causes boils, abscesses and wound infection, and occasionally urinary infection. MRSA strains resist several common antibiotics.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR or culture. Treatment depends on the site and on whether the strain is methicillin-resistant.

Where to test

Back to index

Group B Streptococcus — what a positive result means

Streptococcus agalactiae STI-14Pregnancy-relevant

Matters most in pregnancy. Around one in four women carry it harmlessly, but it can be passed to a baby during delivery.

Specimen: Genital or rectal swab
Price: In STI-14 PCR

What it is

A bacterium that colonises the vagina and bowel of many healthy women without causing symptoms. It is not sexually transmitted in any meaningful sense.

When it matters

In pregnancy, carriage matters because the baby can acquire it during birth, which can cause serious newborn infection. Screening in late pregnancy is standard in many countries.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR or culture. Carriers do not need treatment outside pregnancy; in labour, intravenous antibiotics protect the baby.

Where to test

Back to index

Enterococcus faecalis — what a positive result means

Enterococcus faecalis UTI organism

A bowel organism that reaches the urinary tract. Common in catheter-associated and recurrent urinary infection.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A bacterium that is a normal part of bowel flora and a frequent cause of urinary tract infection, particularly in older people and after instrumentation.

When it matters

Causes cystitis and, less often, more serious infection including endocarditis. It is intrinsically resistant to several antibiotic classes.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR or culture. Treatment is guided by sensitivities.

Where to test

Back to index

Enterococcus faecium — what a positive result means

Enterococcus faecium Opportunistic

The more resistant of the two enterococci. Strains resistant to last-line antibiotics are a recognised hospital problem.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A bowel bacterium closely related to E. faecalis but generally more antibiotic-resistant. Usually associated with healthcare exposure.

When it matters

Causes urinary tract and bloodstream infection, mainly in people with significant medical histories rather than in otherwise healthy adults.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR or culture, with sensitivity testing essential given resistance patterns.

Where to test

Yeasts and fungi

Thrush and related yeasts. They live harmlessly in many people and overgrow when the balance shifts.

Candida albicans — symptoms and treatment

Candida albicans STI-14Thrush

Thrush is not a sexually transmitted infection. Most cases arise from a yeast already present, not from a partner.

Specimen: Genital swab
Price: In STI-14 PCR

What it is

The yeast responsible for most vaginal thrush. It lives harmlessly in many people and overgrows when the balance changes — after antibiotics, in pregnancy, or with poorly controlled diabetes.

When it matters

Causes thick white discharge, itching, soreness and pain during sex or urination. In men it can cause redness and irritation of the glans.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR or culture. Treated with antifungal cream or an oral tablet. Recurrent thrush may need a longer course.

Where to test

Back to index

Candida glabrata — symptoms and treatment

Candida glabrata Resistant yeast

Less responsive to standard treatment. Identifying the species matters because the usual antifungal often will not clear it.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A yeast causing a minority of thrush cases, more often in women with diabetes or recurrent symptoms.

When it matters

Symptoms are similar to ordinary thrush but frequently milder, and typically persist after standard first-line antifungal treatment.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR, which distinguishes it from C. albicans. Treated with alternative antifungals such as boric acid, chosen by a clinician.

Where to test

Back to index

Candida krusei — symptoms and treatment

Candida krusei Resistant yeast

Intrinsically resistant to the standard first-line antifungal. A positive result changes the treatment plan straight away.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

An uncommon cause of thrush, notable because it does not respond to the most widely used antifungal.

When it matters

Symptoms are those of thrush, but treatment failure is the usual reason it comes to attention.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR. Requires an antifungal other than the usual first-line agent.

Where to test

Back to index

Candida tropicalis — symptoms and treatment

Candida tropicalis Less common yeast

Less common, and more often symptomatic than the yeasts that colonise quietly.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A yeast that can cause vaginal and urinary infection, and invasive infection in people with weakened immunity.

When it matters

Causes thrush-like symptoms. In the urinary tract it is more often significant than other Candida species.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR. Usually responds to standard antifungals, guided by symptoms and site.

Where to test

Back to index

Candida species — symptoms and treatment

Candida spp. Genus-level result

A genus-level result. It confirms yeast is present without naming which one, and species matters for treatment.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A result reported when yeast DNA is detected but the specific species is not resolved.

When it matters

Useful for confirming that yeast is contributing to symptoms. Where treatment has already failed, species-level identification is worth requesting.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR. Treatment starts with a standard antifungal; persistent symptoms warrant identifying the species.

Where to test

Back to index

Meyerozyma guilliermondii — symptoms and treatment

Meyerozyma guilliermondii Rare yeast

An uncommon environmental yeast. On a genital sample it more often reflects colonisation than true infection.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A yeast previously named Candida guilliermondii, found in the environment and on skin. It rarely causes genital infection in healthy people.

When it matters

Clinically relevant mainly in people with weakened immunity or indwelling medical devices. It shows reduced susceptibility to some antifungals.

Testing and treatment

Detected by PCR. Interpret alongside symptoms; treatment is not automatic on a positive result.

Where to test

Back to index

Aspergillus species — symptoms and treatment

Aspergillus spp. Environmental mould

An environmental mould, not a genital organism. On a urogenital sample it usually indicates contamination.

Specimen: Urine or swab
Price: In STI-29 PCR

What it is

A mould found in soil, dust and decaying matter. It is inhaled routinely by everyone and does not colonise the genital tract in healthy people.

When it matters

Causes lung disease in people with asthma, existing lung damage or weakened immunity. It is not sexually transmitted.

Testing and treatment

A positive result on a genital sample should be discussed with a clinician, who will usually consider sample contamination first.

Book an STD test in Bangkok or across Thailand

STI-14 PCR covers the fourteen infections most worth ruling out. STI-29 adds urogenital flora and yeasts. Both run from a single sample, with VIP Express results in 3 hours, at a clinic or at home.

Packages and prices

Six tiers, each one adding to the last

Every price below is the clinic price in Bangkok. Provincial pricing varies slightly because express courier runs are not available outside Bangkok.

Each tier contains everything above it. Prices in Thai baht.
Package	What it adds	Price
Standard	HIV Ag/Ab combo (4th gen), HBsAg, HCV, VDRL/RPR	1,799
STI-14 PCR	14 organisms by PCR from one specimen	3,499
Platinum most booked	Standard and STI-14 together	4,999
Diamond	HPV PCR, 29 genotypes	7,499

Choose by exposure, not by price

Which test do you need, and when

Taking an STI test too early is the most common wasted trip. Each infection has a window period — the time before it can be detected at all.

Since the exposure	What is worth testing now	What to come back for
1–4 days	Nothing reliable yet for HIV. PCR can already pick up gonorrhoea (2–6 days), chlamydia (3–5 days) and bacterial vaginosis organisms if you have symptoms.	HIV RNA PCR from day 5.
5–7 days	HIV RNA PCR — the earliest reliable HIV test there is. STI‑14 PCR covers chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, trichomonas and the rest.	HIV 4th-gen combo and syphilis serology at 2–6 weeks.
2–4 weeks	HIV Ag/Ab 4th-generation combo. Syphilis, ureaplasma and mycoplasma become detectable (1–2 weeks).	Repeat HIV combo at 6 weeks to close the window.
6 weeks or more	Full screen. Platinum (Standard + STI‑14) is the usual choice at this point.	Hepatitis B and C if not already covered.
No exposure, routine check	Standard ฿1,799 for HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis, or Platinum ฿4,999 to add the 14-infection PCR panel.	Yearly, or after each new partner.

Full earliest-detection times for all 29 PCR organisms are in the organism reference.

Why the test costs more than a ฿300 strip

PCR, and why it finds what rapid tests miss

PCR looks for the organism's own DNA or RNA. A rapid test looks for your body's antibody response, which takes weeks to build. That difference is the whole reason a PCR test can tell you something useful a week after an exposure and a rapid test cannot.

Rapid / strip test

Antibody detection

What it finds: Antibodies your immune system has made.
Earliest useful: Usually 3–12 weeks after exposure.
Covers: Typically HIV and syphilis only.
A negative at one week: Means nothing about that exposure.

PCR — what MedEx runs

Direct organism detection

What it finds: The organism's own genetic material, amplified in a laboratory until it is measurable.
Earliest useful: 2–7 days for most organisms; HIV RNA from about 5–7 days.
Covers: 29 organisms across the STI‑14 and STI‑29 panels.
Site-specific: Works on urine, genital, throat and rectal swabs — the only way to find throat and rectal infection.

MedEx runs PCR at its own laboratory in Bang Kho Laem rather than sending samples out, which is what makes a 3–5 hour express result possible in Bangkok. Antibody and antigen tests still have their place — the 4th-generation HIV combo and syphilis serology are the right tests once enough time has passed, and both are in the ฿1,799 Standard package.

Named, in full — not "up to 29 infections"

If the exposure was in the last 72 hours

Testing is not the first thing to do

After a condom failure or unprotected sex with someone whose status you do not know, HIV PEP has to start within 72 hours. No test will be positive yet, so a negative result now tells you nothing about this exposure. Getting PEP started does.

0–24 hoursMost effective. Start today if you can. 24–48 hoursStill worth starting. 48–72 hoursThe last window.

After 72 hours PEP is no longer recommended. Test at 5–7 days with HIV RNA PCR instead, and again at four weeks.

Bangkok at twilight, seen across the city's office towers — Visiting Thailand
Testing while you are travelling

No Thai ID, no appointment and no passport check. In Bangkok you can have the result before you fly, and if you have already left the city, there are labs in more than thirty provinces.

If you fly out in a day or two

VIP Express in Bangkok returns the results including STI-14 PCR and HPV PCR in 3–5 hours, so a morning sample is a result before dinner. Outside Bangkok, allow 1–3 days.
No Thai ID, no Thai phone

Neither is needed. No passport is checked, and results go to any email address you give us. Walk in at Sukhumvit 13 (2–5 minutes from BTS Nana, BTS Asok and MRT Sukhumvit) or Phra Khanong.
If you need it for a visa or a job

Lab reports and medical certificates are emailed as soon as they are ready. Tell reception what the certificate is for before the sample is taken, so the right tests and wording are used — a certificate cannot be reissued from an anonymous test.
Outside Bangkok

MedEx Neo Clinic Chiang Mai, plus 50+ partner laboratories across 30+ provinces including Phuket, Pattaya, Krabi and Koh Samui. Turnaround and price vary slightly by location.

Anonymous by default. We ask for a name only when you want a certificate in one, so decide before the sample is taken rather than after the result.

If you would rather not come in at all

Testing at your home or hotel

Two ways to be tested without visiting a clinic. Both run the same PCR panels at our own Bangkok laboratory.

A clinician comes to you
- ฿750 per location
- Blood and swabs
- Everyone at one address included
The fee is charged per address, on top of the test price, and does not go up for each additional person tested there — which makes it the cheapest option for a couple.

Book STD Test at home
Self-collection kit by post
- No visit fee
- Swabs and urine only
- Courier back, both ways
The same STI‑14 PCR panel, collected by you. Self-collected vaginal swabs perform as well as clinician-collected ones, so nothing is lost on the swab tests — but anything needing blood still needs a draw.

At-home STI‑14 PCR kit

Not sure which? If your panel includes HIV, syphilis or hepatitis, it needs blood, so the clinician visit is the one that covers everything in a single appointment.

Comparing clinics

Choosing an STD clinic: five questions worth asking before you pay

Bangkok clinics advertise panels as numbers — 14, 28, 29, "full screen" — and the numbers are not comparable. These are the questions that make them comparable, with our answers.

Ask	Why it matters	MedEx
Which organisms, by name?	"29 infections" means nothing if the list is not published. Two panels of 29 can share only half their targets.	All 14 and all 29 named on this page, with what a positive means for each.
Which specimen sites are included?	A urine-only panel misses throat and rectal infection completely, and both are usually symptomless.	Urine, genital, throat, rectal and blood. Each site is a separate specimen and is priced as one.
How long, exactly?	"Fast" and "same day" are not times. A sample taken at 8 PM is not a same-day result anywhere.	VIP Express 3–5 hours in Bangkok; 1–3 days outside Bangkok. Published per test above.
Is ID required, and what is recorded?	Decides whether a result can ever be linked back to you.	No ID, no passport. Test under a first name. Nothing reported to anyone.
What happens if it is positive?	A result with no treatment path attached is half a service.	Counsellor call, doctor consultation from ฿500 in person or online, medication delivered.

Asked often enough that it deserves a straight answer

Is there free STD testing in Bangkok?

Yes, for some tests and some people. We would rather tell you than have you find out afterwards.

Free and low-cost public options

Free and subsidised HIV testing may be available in Thailand through public health services. What is covered, who qualifies and what it costs vary, so check with them directly rather than taking our word for it. If cost is the deciding factor and you can wait, that is a reasonable place to start.

What you are paying for here

Same-day PCR rather than a wait. No appointment, 6 AM to 10 PM, seven days. A 14 or 29-organism panel rather than HIV alone. Throat and rectal specimens, not urine only. Reports written in English. A doctor consultation from ฿750 if something needs treating, and medication delivered.

Both are valid choices. If you want the broadest panel, the fastest result, or testing outside office hours, that is what this clinic is for.

STD tests in Bangkok — common questions

Do I need ID or a passport to get an STD test in Bangkok?

No. MedEx does not check ID or a passport, and you can test under a first name only. Nothing is reported to employers, insurers or immigration. If you need a named medical certificate for a visa or a job, say so before the sample is taken — a certificate cannot be issued afterwards from an anonymous test.

How much does an STD test cost in Bangkok?

At MedEx, ฿1,799 for the Standard screen (HIV 4th-gen combo, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis) and ฿3,499 for the STI‑14 PCR panel. Platinum, which is both together, is ฿4,999. Single tests start at ฿499 for hepatitis B and ฿799 for the HIV combo. Home or hotel collection adds ฿750 per location.

How fast can I get results?

VIP Express in Bangkok returns HIV RNA PCR and STI‑14 PCR in 3–5 hours. Outside Bangkok the same tests take 1–3 days. Express is a per-specimen fee: ฿5,000 against ฿3,499 for regular STI‑14 PCR.

How soon after sex can I be tested?

It depends on the infection. Gonorrhoea is detectable by PCR from 2–6 days, chlamydia from 3–5 days, trichomonas from 5–7 days, and syphilis, ureaplasma and mycoplasma from 1–2 weeks. HIV RNA PCR detects HIV from around 5–7 days after exposure — earlier than any antibody test. A 4th-generation HIV combo is reliable from 2–6 weeks.

Is a urine test enough?

Only for the site it samples. PCR finds infection where the specimen comes from, so if you have had oral or anal sex, urine will miss throat and rectal infection completely — and both are usually symptomless. Each additional site is charged as a separate specimen.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

Yes, any day from 6 AM to 10 PM including weekends and public holidays, at MedEx Neo Clinic on Sukhumvit 13 (Floor 1A, The Trendy Office Building, 2–5 minutes from BTS Nana, BTS Asok and MRT Sukhumvit) or at Phra Khanong (1521/4 Taisin Square, 3 minutes from BTS Phra Khanong).

Can someone come to my hotel or home?

Yes. Clinician-assisted collection at a home or hotel is ฿750 per location, with no extra charge for other people tested at the same address.

What is the difference between STI‑14 and STI‑29?

STI‑14 covers the 14 organisms behind the common curable STIs plus bacterial vaginosis and thrush. STI‑29 adds 15 more — urinary-tract bacteria, anaerobes and resistant yeasts — and is available in Bangkok and selected provinces. Both panel lists are published in full on this page, organism by organism.

What happens if a result is positive?

A counsellor contacts you and arranges a consultation with an STD doctor at MedEx Neo Clinic, in person or online, from ฿500. Most of what these panels detect is curable with antibiotics; HIV and herpes are treatable and managed. Treatment can be delivered to your door.

Do you test outside Bangkok?

Yes — MedEx Neo Clinic Chiang Mai, and 50+ partner laboratories across 30+ provinces including Phuket, Pattaya, Krabi and Koh Samui. VIP Express 3–5 hour turnaround is Bangkok only; elsewhere allow 1–3 days. Pricing varies slightly by location.

Are there instant-result STD tests?

Nothing credible is instant. Rapid antibody strips give a reading in 20 minutes but cannot detect a recent infection at all, and a negative strip after a recent exposure is meaningless. The fastest reliable option is PCR: VIP Express returns HIV RNA PCR and STI‑14 PCR in 3–5 hours in Bangkok, from a real laboratory run rather than a strip.

What is the cheapest STD test in Bangkok?

Single tests are the cheapest entry: ฿499 for hepatitis B (HBsAg), ฿500 for syphilis (VDRL/RPR), ฿700 for hepatitis C, ฿799 for the 4th-generation HIV combo. The ฿1,799 Standard package bundles all four and is cheaper than buying them separately. Cheap is not always right, though — none of those four detect chlamydia or gonorrhoea, which need the ฿3,499 PCR panel.

Can I get tested anonymously in Bangkok?

Yes, and it is the default here rather than something you have to ask for. No ID or passport is checked, you can book and test under a first name or a name you choose, payment can be cash, and results go only to the email address you give us. Nothing is reported to employers, insurers, embassies or visa processors.

Do I need to fast, or stop antibiotics, before an STD test?

No fasting. For urine PCR, try not to pass urine for at least an hour before the sample, and do not clean the area first — the sample needs what is at the urethral opening. If you have taken antibiotics in the past two weeks, say so: they can suppress a bacterial PCR result and the test may need repeating.

Can a regular blood test detect an STD?

No — and this is the most common and most costly misunderstanding we see. A standard health-checkup blood panel measures things like blood count, liver enzymes, kidney function, cholesterol and blood sugar. None of those detect a sexually transmitted infection. An annual company checkup will not tell you whether you have chlamydia.

Some STIs are found from blood, but only when they are specifically ordered: HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, and HSV serology. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas, mycoplasma, ureaplasma, Gardnerella, Candida and HPV are not blood tests at all — they need a urine sample or a swab from the site of exposure.

Do antibiotics affect STD test results?

They can. Antibiotics taken in the two weeks before a sample can suppress a bacterial PCR result and produce a false negative for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, mycoplasma and ureaplasma. Tell reception if you have taken any — including antibiotics given for something unrelated, like a dental or chest infection — and the test may need to be repeated later. Antibiotics do not affect HIV, hepatitis or HPV results.

What is the difference between a PCR test and a rapid test?

PCR detects the organism's own DNA or RNA directly. A rapid or strip test detects the antibodies your immune system makes in response, which takes weeks to build. A rapid test a week after an exposure cannot tell you anything about that exposure; PCR can, from 2–7 days for most organisms and from about 5–7 days for HIV RNA. PCR also works on throat and rectal swabs, which antibody tests cannot do at all.

How do I read my result?

Reports are in English and name the organism, the specimen and the method. Not every positive on a broad PCR panel is a sexually transmitted infection — Ureaplasma, Mycoplasma hominis, Gardnerella, Candida and several of the STI‑29 organisms are normal flora in many people and only matter at high loads or with symptoms. Our organism reference explains what a positive means for each one, and a counsellor will talk you through anything unclear.
