How it works

Cell-free DNA in a pregnant woman’s blood includes fragments from the placenta, which is genetically the same as the fetus in the great majority of pregnancies. NIPP identifies genetic markers present in the fetal DNA that did not come from the mother — those must have come from the biological father — and compares them against the alleged father’s profile.

These tests typically analyse thousands of SNP markers, considerably more than a standard postnatal STR paternity test, because the fetal signal has to be extracted from a much larger maternal background. Results are reported as a probability of paternity, or as an exclusion.

The alleged father’s sample is usually a straightforward cheek swab. The maternal sample is a standard blood draw, arrangeable at home in Bangkok through the nurse-at-home service.

Timing and what affects reliability

Most laboratories offer NIPP from around 7 to 9 weeks, slightly earlier than NIPT, though thresholds vary. As with NIPT, the constraint is fetal fraction — there has to be enough placental DNA in the sample.
