Know the Symptoms, Risks, and Treatments for STIs

As experts in sexual health testing, we understand the importance of staying informed and educated about sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Whether you are sexually active or not, it is crucial to know your status and take necessary steps to protect your health.

Why Get Tested for STIs?

Many STIs do not have visible symptoms, which means you could be infected and not even know it. Left untreated, STIs can lead to serious health problems, including infertility, cancer, and even death.

MedEx Network offers a comprehensive range of sexual health testing services to help you take control of your sexual health. Our tests are quick, confidential, and accurate, giving you peace of mind and the information you need to make informed decisions about your health.

Types of Sexual Health Testing

Our Network Providers offer a variety of sexual health testing services to suit your needs. Here are some of the most common tests we offer:

  1. Blood Tests – Blood tests are used to detect infections that are transmitted through the bloodstream, such as HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis.
  2. Urine Tests – Urine tests are used to detect infections that are transmitted through bodily fluids, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea.
  3. Swab Tests – Swab tests are used to detect infections that are transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, such as genital herpes and human papillomavirus (HPV).
  4. Physical Exams – Physical exams can help detect STIs that have visible symptoms, such as genital warts or sores.

The Importance of Confidentiality

At MedEx, we understand the sensitive nature of sexual health testing, which is why we prioritize confidentiality in all of our services. We offer a safe and private environment for testing, and all of our results are kept strictly confidential.

Our network's experienced medical staff will work with you to determine which tests are appropriate for your needs, and will guide you through the testing process from start to finish.

If you do test positive for an STI, our doctors will work with you to provide the necessary treatment, while also helping you to prevent the spread of the infection to others.

By getting tested regularly, you can catch and treat STIs early, before they cause irreversible damage to your health.

What is Chlamydia? Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis , which is primarily spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected partner and can also be transmitted from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.

What are the symptoms of Chlamydia? Often, time people infected with Chlamydia are asymptomatic. Therefore it is sometimes called a “Silent” STI, but those who do note symptoms should be aware that they may be caused by other STIs or conditions. Women may have abnormal yellowish vaginal discharge, pain or burning during urination and sex, bleeding between periods or after sex, lower abdominal pain, or pelvic pain.

Men may have unusual discharges, pain or swelling in the testicles, and a burning sensation during urination.

In men, it may cause epididymitis, inflammation of the tube that carries sperm, which can lead to infertility.

A newborn baby exposed to Chlamydia during delivery might suffer from arthritis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, and eye infections.

How is Chlamydia Diagnosed and treated? Chlamydia is diagnosed through laboratory tests such as urine tests, genital or rectal swab tests, or throat swab tests. Testing is recommended for sexually active individuals, especially those with multiple partners or unprotected sex. Treatment includes antibiotics. Patients and their sexual partners should complete the entire course of antibiotics and avoid sexual activity until treatment is complete.

Why you should not leave Chlamydia untreated? If Chlamydia is left untreated, there is an increased risk of getting other STIs, including

What is Gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae . It can affect both men and women and is spread through sexual contact with an infected person, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her baby during childbirth.

What are the Symptoms of Gonorrhea? Gonorrhea may not cause any symptoms in some people, but common symptoms include painful urination, discharge from the penis or vagina, pain during sex, and abdominal pain. Symptoms may appear within a few days or several weeks after infection.

How is Gonorrhea Diagnosed and treated? Gonorrhea is diagnosed through a laboratory test of a sample of urine, vaginal fluid, or discharge from the penis or rectum. It is curable and treated with antibiotics, typically a single dose of an injectable medication and/or an oral antibiotic. It is equally important to complete the full course of antibiotics to ensure the infection is completely cleared. To prevent re-infection, it's advisable to abstain from sexual activity for a week after completing treatment.

What Happens if Gonorrhea is Left Untreated? If you leave Gonorrhea untreated, it can increase the risk of contracting other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. In women, untreated gonorrhea can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which may lead to irreversible infertility and fatal ectopic pregnancy. Pregnant women with Gonorrhea are at an increased risk of miscarriage, amniotic sac and fluid infections, and premature birth. The bacterium responsible for Gonorrhea,

What is syphilis? Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum , which is primarily spread through sexual contact with someone with an active infection, usually through contact with the sores or rash on the skin or mucous membranes. The sores can appear on the genitals, anus, or mouth and can be transmitted during oral, anal, vaginal, or genital contact.

What are the Symptoms of Syphilis? Syphilis can be asymptomatic for many years and develops in four stages – primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary. The symptoms of the primary phase are marked by a painless sore (but not always), which progresses to the secondary if left untreated, and symptoms include a rash, fever, sore throat, headaches, weight loss, and fatigue. In the latent stage, there is no apparent sign or symptom, and untreated Syphilis may progress to the tertiary stage resulting in organ damage such as the heart, brain, nervous system, and other organs and eventually death.

How to Avoid Syphilis? To prevent syphilis, it is advised to practice safe sex by using protection, limiting the number of sexual partners, and being in a long-term and mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is free of syphilis.

Similarly, sexually active people falling under any category below should get regular testing for Syphilis:

  • Gay or bisexual men,
  • Have HIV,
  • Taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention, or
  • Have partner(s) who have tested positive for syphilis.

What are the Symptoms of Herpes? Herpes symptoms vary depending on the location of the infection and whether it’s the first outbreak or a recurrent episode. Common symptoms include blisters or sores, itching, burning or tingling sensations, flu-like symptoms, and pain or discomfort during urination. It’s important to note that some people may not experience any symptoms or have mild symptoms that go unnoticed, and symptoms may not appear until several weeks or months after infection.

How is Herpes Diagnosed and treated? Herpes can be diagnosed through a physical exam and laboratory test. Although there is no cure for herpes, antiviral medications can help manage symptoms and reduce outbreak frequency. It is important to communicate openly with sexual partners and work with a healthcare provider to manage herpes symptoms. Herpes can be spread even when there are no visible symptoms.
