¿Qué es la clamidia?

La clamidia es una infección de transmisión sexual (ITS) común causada por la bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. Se transmite principalmente a través de relaciones sexuales vaginales, anales u orales con una pareja infectada y también puede transmitirse de la madre al bebé durante el parto.

Uno de los aspectos más preocupantes de la clamidia es que a menudo no presenta síntomas, lo que dificulta saber si se tiene la infección. Por eso, a veces se la denomina ITS "silenciosa". Si no se trata, la clamidia puede provocar problemas de salud graves, como la enfermedad inflamatoria pélvica (EIP) en las mujeres, que puede causar infertilidad y dolor crónico, y la epididimitis en los hombres.

Áreas infectadas con clamidia

La clamidia puede infectar diversas zonas del cuerpo, como el tracto genital, la garganta y los ojos. En las mujeres, puede infectar el cuello uterino, la uretra, la vagina y el ano, mientras que en los hombres, puede infectar la uretra, el epidídimo y el ano. También puede infectar la garganta si la bacteria se transmite a través del sexo oral y los ojos si entran en contacto con fluidos genitales infectados.

¿Tiene usted clamidia?

Algunas personas con clamidia pueden no presentar síntomas perceptibles, pero quienes sí los presentan suelen manifestarlos entre 1 y 3 semanas después de la exposición a la infección. Estos síntomas pueden indicar clamidia, pero es importante tener en cuenta que también pueden ser causados por otras ITS o afecciones.
Por lo tanto, es fundamental que las personas sexualmente activas que hayan tenido relaciones sexuales sin protección con nuevas o múltiples parejas se realicen pruebas periódicas si tienen alguna preocupación sobre las ITS para asegurarse de no estar infectadas con clamidia ni con ninguna otra ITS.

Los síntomas comunes de clamidia en mujeres pueden incluir:

La clamidia no tratada puede causar graves problemas de salud tanto en hombres como en mujeres. Las mujeres pueden desarrollar la enfermedad inflamatoria pélvica, que puede causar dolor crónico, infertilidad y embarazos ectópicos. Los hombres pueden experimentar epididimitis, una inflamación del conducto que transporta los espermatozoides, que puede causar infertilidad. La clamidia también puede aumentar el riesgo de contraer y transmitir el VIH, además de causar otros problemas de salud como artritis reactiva, conjuntivitis y neumonía.
