SIBO HYDROGEN & METHANE BREATH TEST

Persistent Bloating, Gas or Digestive Discomfort? Check for SIBO

If you frequently experience bloating, excessive gas, abdominal discomfort, constipation or diarrhea, the problem may not always be related to the foods you eat. In some people, these symptoms may be associated with Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).

SIBO occurs when an excessive amount of bacteria develops in the small intestine. These bacteria can ferment carbohydrates before they are normally absorbed, producing gases such as hydrogen and methane. This may contribute to ongoing digestive symptoms and can sometimes resemble IBS or food intolerance.

Common Reasons to Consider a SIBO Breath Test

โœ“ Frequent bloating after meals
โœ“ Excessive intestinal gas
โœ“ Abdominal discomfort or fullness
โœ“ Constipation or diarrhea
โœ“ IBS-like digestive symptoms
โœ“ Unexplained digestive discomfort

How Does the SIBO Breath Test Work?

The SIBO test is a non-invasive hydrogen and methane breath test. After following the required preparation instructions, you drink a specific sugar solution and provide breath samples at scheduled intervals.

The test measures changes in hydrogen and methane gases produced by intestinal bacteria. Abnormal gas patterns can help healthcare professionals evaluate whether bacterial fermentation may be occurring in the small intestine.

SIBO Testing vs. Microbiome Testing

Microbiome testing provides broader information about the microorganisms living in your digestive system, while a SIBO breath test specifically evaluates hydrogen and methane production that may suggest bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. Depending on your symptoms, these tests may provide different and complementary information about digestive health.

5 TYPES OF SIBO BREATH TESTS

Which SIBO Breath Test Is Right for You?

All SIBO breath tests work the same basic way โ€” you drink a sugar solution and provide breath samples over time. What differs is which sugar is used, which changes which part of the small intestine the test can evaluate and what it can help detect. Here's a closer look at each option.

๐Ÿซง

Glucose SIBO Breath Test

Sugar used: Glucose

Glucose is absorbed quickly, mostly in the upper part of the small intestine โ€” closest to the stomach. Because of this, the test mainly reflects bacterial activity in that upper section.

May suit you if: you want a fast, focused check for overgrowth nearer the start of the small intestine. Since glucose is absorbed before it travels far, it may be less likely to pick up overgrowth further down.

๐Ÿซง

Lactulose SIBO Breath Test

Sugar used: Lactulose

Lactulose isn't absorbed by the body, so it travels through the entire length of the small intestine before reaching the colon โ€” giving a longer window to detect gas-producing bacteria along the way.

May suit you if: you want broader coverage of the small intestine than the glucose test offers. This is one of the more commonly used SIBO breath tests.

๐Ÿซง

Fructose SIBO Breath Test

Sugar used: Fructose

This test looks at how your body handles fructose. Abnormal gas patterns can point to SIBO, while difficulty processing the fructose itself may suggest fructose malabsorption.

May suit you if: your bloating, gas or discomfort tends to show up after eating fruit, honey, or foods with added fructose or high-fructose corn syrup.

๐Ÿซง

Lactulose + Fructose Breath Test

Sugars used: Lactulose & Fructose

Combines both solutions in one session, looking at SIBO patterns across the small intestine alongside how your body processes fructose.

May suit you if: your symptoms don't clearly point to one trigger and you'd rather gather more information in a single visit than book two separate tests.

MOST COMPREHENSIVE
๐Ÿซง

All Sugars SIBO Breath Test

Sugars used: Lactulose, Glucose & Fructose

Combines all three substrates to give the broadest single-test view of gas production across the small intestine, covering what each individual test looks at on its own.

May suit you if: you want the most complete picture in one test, or previous, more targeted testing hasn't given you clear answers.

Quick Comparison
Glucose โ€” upper small intestine, fast & focused
Lactulose โ€” full small intestine coverage
Fructose โ€” fruit/sugar-triggered symptoms
Lactulose + Fructose โ€” two answers, one visit

Common Questions

Microbiome Testing FAQ

Everything you need to know about gut, oral and vaginal microbiome testing in Bangkok and across Thailand.

It depends on your symptoms and goals. For a general gut check on a budget, choose Microbiome Basic. For digestive symptoms, fatigue, skin issues or immune concerns, the Complete Microbiome Mapping gives a fuller picture. If your practitioner needs treatment guidance, the Advanced + Sensitivities is the most comprehensive option. Oral and Vaginal panels target the mouth and vagina specifically.

Stool tests use an at-home kit you receive by courier โ€” you collect a small sample privately and return it via prepaid pickup. Oral tests use a saliva or cheek swab. Vaginal tests use a self-administered swab with clear instructions. A MedEx nurse can also assist with collection at home or in clinic if preferred.

Most reports are ready within 7โ€“14 days from when the lab receives your sample. The Vaginal Microbiome Profile is typically the fastest at 5โ€“7 days, while the Advanced Microbiome with sensitivity testing takes the longest at around 14 days. You'll be notified by email and through your patient portal.

Yes. For stool tests, avoid antibiotics, antifungals and probiotics for 2โ€“4 weeks before testing unless your doctor advises otherwise. For oral tests, avoid eating, drinking, smoking or brushing for 1 hour beforehand. For vaginal tests, avoid intercourse, douching or vaginal medications for 24โ€“48 hours prior. Detailed prep instructions are sent with your kit.

Microbiome testing is currently considered a wellness or functional medicine service and is generally not covered by Thai health insurance. Some international insurance plans may reimburse if the test is ordered for specific clinical reasons. We can provide an itemized invoice on request.

Once your results are ready, a MedEx-affiliated doctor will walk you through your report in a 30-minute video or in-person consultation. They explain key findings in plain language, answer your questions, and outline next steps โ€” which may include dietary changes, supplements, repeat testing or a treatment plan.

Yes. We ship test kits across Thailand including Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Koh Samui, Hua Hin and Krabi. Sample return shipping is arranged at no extra cost. Doctor consultations are conducted via teleconsultation in English or Thai.

Yes, with parental supervision and a doctor's recommendation. Pediatric microbiome testing is increasingly used to investigate persistent digestive issues, eczema and recurrent infections in children. Speak to our team for guidance on the most appropriate panel by age.
