Pre-operative assessment

Preoperative procedures are designed to improve the outcome of the surgery, decrease the risk for complications, and make the surgery as safe and effective as possible. You will be screened for underlying disease or problems to correct or treatment before you undergo surgery.

If surgery is being done on an outpatient basis, you must arrange for someone to be with you upon discharge. Even though the anesthesia has worn off, grogginess can last several hours, and it is unsafe to drive. Also, you may need assistance when they get home.

If surgery is being done on an inpatient basis, you must check into a room. To provide the highest quality treatment and services, an individual may be admitted to the hospital for a positive experience, such as reducing excitement, preparing for undergoing an elective surgery or procedure, or because they are being admitted through emergency department.

Before you are taken to your room, admitting procedures are performed. The person’s personal data is recorded and entered into the hospital’s computer system.

Most of patient will return to your room after surgery, but those undergoing complex surgical procedures and those who have complications may go to the intensive care unit (ICU).

Below is a step-by-step guide so you know what to anticipate.

Please think of one or two trusted individuals –family or friends – who you want to identify as your support person and how much you would like them involved in your care. These individuals are welcome to visit you 24 hours/day, seven days a week.
